Oxytocin is a naturally occurring nonapeptide hormone and neuropeptide that plays a central role in social bonding, reproductive physiology, and stress regulation. It is synthesized primarily in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary gland, as well as within specific brain regions through central projections. The peptide has been the subject of extensive research across multiple disciplines, including neuroscience, endocrinology, and behavioral science.

The oxytocin molecule consists of nine amino acids with a disulfide bridge between cysteine residues, forming a cyclic structure. It acts through the oxytocin receptor, a G protein-coupled receptor expressed in multiple tissues, including the brain, uterus, and mammary glands. The receptor is coupled to Gq proteins, which activate phospholipase C and increase intracellular calcium levels.

Oxytocin is best known for its roles in childbirth and lactation, where it stimulates uterine contractions and milk ejection. During labor, oxytocin release triggers rhythmic uterine contractions, while during breastfeeding, it stimulates the ejection of milk from the mammary glands. These functions are essential for reproductive physiology and have been well characterized through decades of clinical research.

Research over recent decades has expanded understanding of oxytocin's functions to include social behavior, trust, emotional regulation, and stress modulation. Laboratory and clinical research has examined its effects on social cognition, pair bonding, and emotional processing. Studies have investigated its influence on trust, empathy, anxiety, and social memory in both healthy individuals and clinical populations.
